The position of father is considered very high in Indian culture. Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram happily accepted fourteen years of exile following the orders of his father Dasharatha. Father’s Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June to express our love and respect towards our Father. This blog presents some verses related to Father’s Day and Father.

सर्वदेवमयः पिता पूजयेत्।
पिता को सभी देवताओं के समान पूज्य मानना चाहिए।
sarvadevamayaḥ pitā pūjayet।
Father should be revered like all the gods.
न सत्यं दानमानौ वा न यज्ञाश्चाप्तदक्षिणाः।
तथा बलकराः सीते! यथा सेवा पितुर्हिता।।
श्रीराम देवी सीता से कहते हैं – हे सीता! पिता की सेवा करना जिस तरह कल्याणकारी माना जाता है, वैसा साधन न सत्य है, न दान-सम्मान है और न बहुत अधिक दक्षिणावाले यज्ञ ही हैं।
na satyaṃ dānamānau vā na yajñāścāptadakṣiṇāḥ।
tathā balakarāḥ sīte! yathā sevā piturhitā।।
Shri Ram says to Devi Sita – O Sita! Truthfulness, charity or sacrificial rituals are not considered as beneficial as serving one’s father.
पिता धर्मः पिता स्वर्गः पिता हि परमं तपः।
पितरि प्रीतिमापन्ने सर्वाः प्रीयन्ति देवताः।।
पिता ही धर्म है, पिता ही स्वर्ग है तथा पिता ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ तपस्या है। पिता के प्रसन्न होने पर समस्त देवता प्रसन्न होते हैं।
pitā dharmaḥ pitā svargaḥ pitā hi paramaṃ tapaḥ।
pitari prītimāpanne sarvāḥ prīyanti devatāḥ।
Father is Dharma, father is heaven and father is the supreme penance. When the father is happy, all the gods are happy.
यः पाति स पिता।
जो रक्षा करता है, वह पिता है।
yaḥ pāti sa pitā।
Father is he, who protects.
पिता परं दैवतं मानवानाम्।
मनुष्यों के लिए पिता सर्वश्रेष्ठ देवता है।
pitā paraṃ daivataṃ mānavanām।
Father is the supreme god for all human beings.
सर्व देवमयः पिता।
पिता सभी देवताओं का स्वरुप है।
sarva devamayaḥ pitā।
Father is the embodiment of all the gods.
पितुराज्ञा परो धर्मः।
पिता की आज्ञा पालन करना सर्वोत्तम धर्म है।
piturājñā paro dharmaḥ।
Following father’s instructions is the greatest Dharma.
पितृ देवो भव।
तुम ऐसे बनो जिसके लिए पिता देवतुल्य हों ।
pitṛ devo bhava!
Be the one for whom the father is like a god.
जनिता चोपनेता च यस्तु विद्यां प्रयच्छति।
अन्नदाता भयत्राता पञ्चैते पितरः स्मृताः।।
जन्म देने वाला, ज्ञान का मार्ग दिखाने वाला, विद्या प्रदान करने वाला, अन्न देने वाला और भय से रक्षा करने वाला – ये पाँच पिता माने गए हैं।
janitā copanetā ca yastu vidyāṃ prayacchati।
annadātā bhayatrātā pañcaite pitaraḥ smṛtāḥ।।
The one who gives birth, shows the path of knowledge, imparts education, provides food and protects from fear – these five are known as fathers.
यन्मातापितरौ वृत्तं तनये कुरुतः सदा।
न सुप्रतिकारं तत्तु मात्रा पित्रा च यत्कृतम्।।
माता-पिता अपने बच्चों के लिए सदा जो कुछ करते हैं, उसका ऋण कभी नहीं चुकाया जा सकता।
yanmātāpitarau vṛttaṃ tanaye kurutaḥ sadā।
na supratikāraṃ tattu mātrā pitrā ca yatkṛtam।।
The deeds that the mother and father do for their children constantly, there is no requital to these actions.
सर्वतीर्थमयी माता सर्वदेवमयः पिता।
मातरं पितरं तस्मात् सर्वयत्नेन पूजयेत्।।
मनुष्य के लिये उसकी माता सभी तीर्थों के समान तथा पिता सभी देवताओं के समान पूजनीय होते है। अतः उसका यह परम कर्तव्य है कि वह उनका अच्छे से आदर और सेवा करे।
sarvatīrthamayī mātā sarvadevamayaḥ pitā।
mātaraṃ pitaraṃ tasmāt sarvayatnena pūjayet।।
For a man, his mother is worship-worthy like all the pilgrimages and his father is worship-worthy like all the gods. Therefore, it is his utmost duty to respect and serve them well.
यं माता-पितरौ क्लेशं, सहेते सम्भवे नृणाम्।
न तस्य निष्कृतिः शक्या, कर्तुं वर्षशतैरपि।।
मानव को जन्म देने (पालन-पोषण) में माता-पिता जितना कष्ट सहते हैं, उसका ऋण सैकड़ों वर्षों में भी नहीं चुकाया जा सकता।
yaṃ mātā-pitarau kleśaṃ,sahete sambhave nṛṇām।
na tasya niṣkṛtiḥ śakyā,kartuṃ varṣaśatairapi।।
The debt of the pain that the parents endure during the birth (upbringing) of their children cannot be repaid even in hundreds of years.
धन्य जनमु जगतीतल तासू। पितहि प्रमोदु चरित सुनि जासू।।
चारि पदारथ करतल ताकें। प्रिय पितु मातु प्रान सम जाकें।।
– रामचरितमानस
अर्थात् इस पृथ्वी पर उसका जीवन धन्य है जिसके चरित्र सुनकर पिता को परम आनंद हो। जिसको माता-पिता प्राणों के समान प्रिय हैं, चारों पदार्थ (अर्थ, धर्म, काम, मोक्ष) उसकी मुट्ठी में रहते हैं।
Blessed is the life of that person on this earth whose character gives immense pleasure to the father. The one who loves his parents as much as his life, all four things (wealth, dharma, desires, salvation) remain within his grasp.
