माँ के बिना हम इस दुनिया में कुछ भी नहीं है क्योंकि हम सभी को जन्म देने वाली माँ ही होती है। माँ ने हमें जन्म दिया है इसलिए उनका स्थान जीवन में सर्वोपरि होता है। माँ के प्यार, त्याग, सुरक्षा देखरेख, सेवा आदि के प्रति सम्मान व्यक्त करने के लिए हर वर्ष मई के दूसरे रविवार के दिन मातृ दिवस या मदर्स डे मनाया जाता है। यहां मातृ दिवस और माताओं से संबंधित कुछ श्लोकऔर शुभकामनाएँ उद्धृत किये जा रहे हैं।
Without mother, we are nothing in this world because it is mother who gives birth to all of us. Mother has given birth to us, hence her place is paramount in life. न मातु: परदैवतम्।
माँ से बढ़कर कोई देव नहीं है।
na mātu: paradaivatam।
There is no god greater than mother.
नास्ति मातृ समो गुरुः।
माँ के समान कोई गुरु नहीं है।
nāsti mātṛ samo guruḥ।
There is no teacher like mother.
गुरूणां माता गरीयसी।
गुरुजनों में माता का स्थान सर्वोच्च होता है।
gurūṇāṃ mātā garīyasī।
Mother has the highest place among teachers.
नास्ति मातृसमा छाया नास्ति मातृसमा गतिः।
नास्ति मातृसमं त्राणं नास्ति मातृसमा प्रपा॥
माता के समान कोई छाया नहीं, कोई आश्रय नहीं, कोई सुरक्षा नहीं। माता के समान इस विश्व में कोई जीवनदाता नहीं।
nāsti mātṛsamā chāyā nāsti mātṛsamā gatiḥ।
nāsti mātṛsamaṃ trāṇaṃ nāsti mātṛsamā prapā।।
There is no shade, no shelter, no protection like a mother. There is no life giver in this world like a mother.
अथ शिक्षा प्रवक्ष्यामः, “मातृमान् पितृमानाचार्यवान पुरूषो वेदः।”
अब शिक्षा का प्रवचन करते हैं, “जब प्रथम शिक्षक माता, द्वितीय पिता और तृतीय गुरु हों तभी कोई व्यक्ति ज्ञानवान होगा।”
atha śikṣā pravakṣyāmaḥ, “mātṛmān pitṛmānācāryavāna purūṣo vedaḥ।”
Let us now describe the education, “Only when the first teacher be the mother, second the father and third the Guru, a person will be knowledgeable.”
अपि स्वर्णमयी लङ्का न मे लक्ष्मण रोचते।
जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी॥
श्रीरामचंद्र बोलते हैं – हे लक्ष्मण, लंका स्वर्णमयी होते हुए भी मुझे आकर्षक नहीं लगती क्योंकि जन्म देने वाली माँ और मातृभूमि स्वर्ग से भी श्रेष्ठ होती है।
api svarṇamayī laṅkā na me lakṣmaṇa rocate।
jananī janmabhūmiśca svargādapi garīyasī।।
Shri Ramchandra says – O Lakshman, despite being golden, Lanka does not seem attractive to me because the mother who gives birth and the motherland are better than heaven.
महाभारत में माँ की महिमा का उल्लेख है। जब यक्ष धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर से सवाल करते हैं कि ‘भूमि से भारी कौन?’ तब युधिष्ठिर कहते हैं-
‘माता गुरुतरा भूमेरू‘।
अर्थात् माँ इस भूमि से कहीं अधिक भारी होती है।
mātā gurutarā bhūmerū।
The glory of mother is mentioned in the Mahabharata. When Yaksha asks Dharmaraj Yudhishthira, ‘Who is heavier than the earth?’, Yudhishthira replies – “Mother is much heavier than this earth.”
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति।
पुत्र कुपुत्र हो सकता है, लेकिन माता कुमाता नहीं हो सकती।
kuputro jāyeta kvacidapi kumātā na bhavati।
The son may be an evil son, but the mother cannot be an evil mother.
‘मातृ देवो भव!’
तुम ऐसे बनो जिसके लिए माता देवतुल्या हो।
mātṛ devo bhava!
You become the one for whom mother is like a goddess.
सर्वतीर्थमयी माता सर्वदेवमयः पिता।
मातरं पितरं तस्मात् सर्वयत्नेन पूजयेत्।।
मनुष्य के लिये उसकी माता सभी तीर्थों के समान तथा पिता सभी देवताओं के समान पूजनीय होते है। अतः उसका यह परम कर्तव्य है कि वह उनका अच्छे से आदर और सेवा करे।
sarvatīrthamayī mātā sarvadevamayaḥ pitā।
mātaraṃ pitaraṃ tasmāt sarvayatnena pūjayet।।
For a man, his mother is worship-worthy like all the pilgrimages and his father is worship-worthy like all the gods. Therefore, it is his utmost duty to respect and serve them well.
यं माता–पितरौ क्लेशं, सहेते सम्भवे नृणाम्।
न तस्य निष्कृतिः शक्या, कर्तुं वर्षशतैरपि।।
मानव को जन्म देने (पालन-पोषण) में माता-पिता जितना कष्ट सहते हैं, उसका ऋण सैकड़ों वर्षों में भी नहीं चुकाया जा सकता।
yaṃ mātā-pitarau kleśaṃ,sahete sambhave nṛṇām।
na tasya niṣkṛtiḥ śakyā,kartuṃ varṣaśatairapi।।
The debt of the pain that the parents endure during the birth (upbringing) of their children cannot be repaid even in hundreds of years.
राजपत्नी गुरोः पत्नी मित्रपत्नी तथैव च।
पत्नीमाता स्वमाता च पञ्चैता मातरः स्मृता॥
राजा की पत्नी, गुरु की पत्नी, मित्र की पत्नी, तथा पत्नी की माता और अपनी माता, इन पाँच को माताएँ माना जाता है।
rājapatnī guroḥ patnī mitrapatnī tathaiva ca।
patnīmātā svamātā ca pañcaitā mātaraḥ smṛtā।।
The king’s wife, the guru’s wife, the friend’s wife, the wife’s mother and one’s own mother, these five are considered mothers.
आदौ माता गुरोः पत्नी ब्राह्मणी राजपत्निका।
धेनुर्धात्री तथा पृथ्वी सप्तैताः मातरः स्मृताः।।
सर्व प्रथम स्वयं अपनी माता, तत्पश्चात् गुरु पत्नी, ब्राह्मण की पत्नी, रानी, गाय, धाय (बचपन में लालन पालन करने वाली या बीमारी में सेवा सुश्रूषा करने वाली स्त्री) तथा यह पृथ्वी, ये सातों माता के समान सम्मानित की जाती हैं।
ādau mātā guroḥ patnī brāhmaṇī rājapatnikā।
dhenurdhātrī tathā pṛthvī saptaitāḥ mātaraḥ smṛtāḥ।।
First of all, one’s own mother, then the Guru’s wife, the Brahmin’s wife, the queen, the cow, the nanny (the woman who takes care in childhood or takes care during illness) and the earth, all these seven are honored as mothers.
